Eyewear Trends 2024: Innovation and Sustainability at MIDO Fair – EYESEEMAG

maximios

August 7, 2025

News

One of the world’s largest international trade shows for the eyewear industry, MIDO will be held in Milan from 3 until 5 February 2024, offering professionals the chance to reflect on the future of the optical industry, discover new brands and identify new trends. EYESEEmag met with MIDO President Giovanni Vitaloni to talk about fashion, technology and all things ethics and get an idea of what we can expect at this year’s event.

Advanced technologies are not just for experts, they’re part of everyday life now. We notice them in the online purchasing experience which is becoming increasingly interactive, with virtual try-on tools.

We also have 3D-printed glasses which allow manufacturers to create personalised frames. They offer consumers unique options which adapt to their style and facial features. We can also talk about smart glasses which incorporate technology allowing digital information to be superimposed onto the wearer’s field of vision, or virtual Try-On glasses whose frames incorporate captors and monitors.
They measure elements such as heart rate, blood pressure and activity levels, providing the wearer with precious information about their health. Finally, progress has also been made regarding high-tech materials; lightweight, sustainable components such as memory foam metals and plastics have been developed. This means suppler frames that are more comfortable to wear.

AI can be used to collect and analyse customer data. This helps opticians gain a better understanding of customer preferences, and in turn to offer each one a personalised experience.

Augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) are another revolution, allowing people shopping for glasses to interact with products and services in an immersive, virtual way.

To finish, I would say that AI is revolutionising how we research and develop new products. We are discovering new materials, developing more effective lenses and improving the quality of frames.

It can be difficult because brand marketing campaigns are often misleading, to make them appear more eco-friendly than they really are.

Consumers like to make reasoned decisions and are extremely demanding, especially the younger generation. This obviously extends to the glasses they choose.

At MIDO 2024, we’ll attribute the Certified Sustainable Eyewear award. Only manufacturers that can explain the sustainable process behind their designs and developments will be awarded this label. Our goal is to help consumers make sustainable choices by providing them with information on how, when and where each pair of glasses is made.

This label is extremely relevant and an important tool for sustainable brands, allowing them to be transparent regarding their manufacturing methods. We’re convinced that it can help our industry to progress.

During the event, we work with MIDO TV, a free tool which showcases exhibitors through interviews or reports, which they can then share on other media.

Exhibitors and visitors are also invited to apply for our awards granted to ethical brands. We have six awards, including Certified Sustainable Eyewear (CSE) and Stand Up For Green, attributed to the most sustainable stand. Through these rewards, we want to encourage industry players to improve their environmental and social sustainability.

Anyone who wishes to apply for the CSE award will need to optimise and document their actions taken to protect the environment, and all MIDO exhibitors are encouraged to use more attractive, eco-friendly stands.

The rewards are also an excellent opportunity for all participants to familiarise themselves with brands, stands, trends and all things eyewear related!

Sustainability also has a social aspect. MIDO has been working on being inclusive for some time, through the ANFAO’s (Italian association of eyewear manufacturers) project Empowering Optical Women Leadership, which helps support and guide women in the eyewear industry.

An observatory on gender equality in management positions was also organised in order to take stock of the current situation, identify difficulties and establish guidelines for the training project designed to promote female career development.

The initial results will be shared at MIDO 2024 and a conference will be dedicated to the topic. The ANFAO, in collaboration with our eyewear show, also organised a series of classes to promote inclusiveness in December 2023 and January 2024.

We’re convinced that these actions will have a positive impact on the eyewear manufacturing process, and help create a virtuous circle in the industry.

As always, MIDO will give us an insight into upcoming trends. Technology is becoming more and more important with smart devices which adapt to outdoor conditions. Consumers are increasingly interested in personalised products, whether that means bespoke, limited edition or numbered glasses.

You can expect to see styles for more sophisticated consumers who believe in gender fluid fashion and embrace the quiet luxury trend, true designer objects and high-performance sports glasses. Sustainable and recyclable materials are also at the top of the trend list alongside bold, oversized frames, high-tech options and 3D-printed glasses, all in a wide range of colours and shapes.

Finally, on the side of Italian manufacturers, foreign buyers increasingly appreciate and seek out locally made products with an attention to the smallest details, which is seen as added value.

The famous faces who never go without glasses – EYESEEMAG

maximios

August 7, 2025

Culture lunettes

Celebrities have long enjoyed a love affair with dark glasses. Stars turn to glasses to protect themselves from flash-happy paparazzi, any time they want to go unnoticed – and for fashion. For some, they are more than just accessories, they are about standing out and can be essential to their image, even. But who are the famous faces rarely seen without them and which styles are they attached to?

© Anna Wintour

The legendary Anna Wintour is inseparable from her shades. As Editor-in-chief of American Vogue and the high priestess of fashion, she insists on wearing her favorite vintage eyewear by Chanel on the front row at fashion shows around the world. Whether she wants to protect her eyes or hide her true feelings about the clothes on the catwalk, this cult of mystery certainly makes life harder for the designers who look for her approval in the hope it will ensure their success.

© Gims

Forever hidden behind his shades, Gims enjoys cultivating mystery around who he is too. Dark glasses are like his armor, with the must-have accessories also used to set off all his outfits, not to mention set him apart from other rappers. The artist is really into shades by the luxury German label, Cazal. In fact, it collaborated with the singer on the black and gold design he wears in the video for his single, Bella.

© Meryl Streep

While most celebrities prefer to leave their glasses at home if walking the red carpet, Oscar-winning actress Meryl Streep is one of the exceptions, who likes to wear her specs for an appearance. Round, rectangle, cat eye, minimalist, titanium and acetate… Streep likes to experiment with different shapes and styles – like at the Golden Globe Awards in 2018, when she went for some light brown butterfly frames.

© Kikesa

Glasses may be popular with rappers, but Kikesa tends to focus on the quirky and colorful creations with psychedelic accents by Kelvin Mutlu, an eyewear manufacturer based in Bordeaux. In fact, the accessories have an especially important role to play in being central to the story behind the new album, ‘Rubi’, which mentions his imaginary best friend, who can only be seen when he wears his magic frames.

© Bono

Having suffered from glaucoma for over 20 years, the lead singer for the band U2 was forced to wear glasses all the time in an effort to protect his eyes, as the disease made them more sensitive to light. He has used his fame to raise public awareness for years, setting up initiatives like his collaboration with the eyewear brand Revo, aimed at raising funds to improve access to eye care for the neediest.

© Victoria Bekham

The business woman and fashion icon is well-known for accessorizing her fashion-forward outfits with shades so big that they cover up most of her face. Following on from her beauty range, leather goods and ready-to-wear, it was only natural that Posh should launch her eponymous eyewear collection. Suitably classic and sophisticated, it features aviator, square and round styles, offering something for everyone.

Available here.

© DJ Snake

Somehow, the French record producer has managed to conquer the world without showing us his face. Shades are an all-important part of his look, allowing him to avoid attracting attention and go about his business without being bothered. To help him achieve this, he favors brands like Louis Vuitton and Karen Walker, but also collects vintage designs that he stores in their own special box. A true lover of fine frames.

© Iris Apfel

As well as her iconic oversize glasses with their striking thick black frames, the most stylish centenarian on the planet is renowned for her taste in cool and colorful clothing. Doubtless, this will be an important part of Iris Apfel x H&M, her upcoming collection created in partnership with H&M, which goes on sale this spring. Proof, if ever it were needed, that glasses can be an important part of any outfit.

Match eyewear frames with different colors – EYESEEMAG

maximios

August 7, 2025

Focus

After mastering the sun’s rays using light-reactive lenses that adapt automatically to brightness, Transitions® is teaching us the art of pairing – how to combine our favorite frames with the seven tinted lenses in its range.

Partnership

Offering a boost of sunshine during the winter or a splash of good vibes in summer, glasses with tinted lenses have a “wow” factor that everyone wants – even with prescription eyewear. And given that the warmer season means increased exposure to sunlight, Transitions® light-reactive lenses tick every box for being fashion must-haves while keeping you protected during the summer.

Of course, these products are great for protecting our eyes from UV rays and harmful, blue-violet light. But above all, without sacrificing our safety, we want them to go beyond function and reflect our personality. In short, just like cutting-edge sunglasses, our prescription eyewear should be perfect – from the choice of frames to the tinted lenses. From classic tints to the most daring colors, knowing how to pair them guarantees an eye-catching look in the summer sun. Read on to learn how to make the right match!

versace_0ve2249_amethyst-6694762

First things first: What is your favorite color? Each person’s answer is the highly personal result of individual experiences, worldviews, and emotions. Put simply, it’s the color that makes us feel good. Whether on a bag, a pair of shoes, or a piece of clothing, our favorite color gives us self-confidence. When applied to lenses using photochromic technology backed by multiple patents, this unique tint and its different nuances will have the same magical effect. The final product effortlessly transforms into an ultra-desirable, uber-stylish object in just a few instants thanks to natural sunlight. You can play with tone-on-tone frame-lens ensembles, opt for contrasting colors, or even mix and match with daring tints. Light-reactive tinted lenses have the unique power of enhancing understated frames, softening otherwise ostentatious glasses, and highlighting bold geometric shapes. The selection of colors in the Transitions® Signature® GEN 8TM range adapt to every combination imaginable. Let the pairing session begin!

persol_0po3269s_sapphire_3-4-8893655

Now let’s take a visit to our favorite optician and peruse the Transitions® lenses! Ranging from classic colors (gray, brown, graphite green) to more original tints (sapphire, amethyst, amber, emerald), they’re guaranteed to turn heads! But let’s try to push the potential of our future eyewear even further… Take some simple black frames and try them with all the available Transitions® lenses. The result will surprise you!

Next, try your absolute fantasy frames and go through the full spectrum of colors. The easiest way is to combine them with a similar tint to create a risk-free, tone-on-tone effect, but that might also look super stylish when swapped for gray or emerald. You can also experiment with contrasts, which are sure to make a splash. Did you know that tortoiseshell is making a major comeback? Try Ray-Ban Havana frames with emerald lenses! Or perhaps some elegant Persol frames in oh-so trendy translucent yellow, paired with sapphire lenses for an attention-grabbing look. We’d love to see this adorable color everywhere! The most daring shoppers can combine different frame colors and tints with joyous abandon. You’ll see – it’s so much fun, and addictive!

essayage-virtuel-transitions-4866304

So we can have fun mixing looks, styles, and colors, Transitions® has developed a five-star, online virtual try-on service which is very convincing and easy to use. But to make the experience even better, why not go all-in and try different models at your local optician’s? Along with colorful display units and UV lamps that activate the lenses by simulating sunlight, you can also take advantage of the facial expertise offered by a professional. From transparent to color lenses to the full breadth of on-trend gradients, effortless chic is yours to command!

transitions, lenses between style and protection – EYESEEMAG

One of Transitions’ ambitions is to go “further to continue to meet the lifestyle of today’s generations, to make their glasses desirable and to make them a part of everyone’s identity in Paris, New York, Sydney, Shanghai or anywhere else in the world”. This is how Laurent Dosseville explains the new identity of the brand that had historically targeted people over 45 years of age. “Today, 25-39 year olds represent a big opportunity on the market, it is necessary to reinvent the brand and seduce them in our way of communicating by being trendy”. In order to offer glasses which better meet the expectations of all, Transitions Optical’s experts interviewed over 76,000 eyeglass wearers and more than 8,400 eyecare professionals. And as the brand explains “In the case of the Transitions® Signature® GEN 8TM project, the study highlighted, in order of importance, the following criteria: UV protection, speed of activation of the lenses, darkening intensity, their transparency inside and the durability of their performance”.
